Assessment

  • Practical and applied assessments, including work-place assignments and case studies.
  • For the award of BA Business & Enterprise you must successfully pass all four modules, giving a total of 120 credits. All modules are 20 credits, except where indicated.
  • Within each trimester, whilst there is flexibility to work through the material at your own pace you need to be aware of the assessment dates as there is no flexibility in these.
  • If there is any question regarding the authorship of any submitted assessments, we reserve the right to require students to undertake an online viva.

The University will also consider mature applicants on a case-by-case basis taking into account recognition of prior learning (RPL) as mapped and appropriate.

Standard entry: Higher National Diploma in business or management related subjects plus current work experience in a business environment.

Non-Diploma holders, or those with lesser qualifications, but with a minimum 5 years or more relevant work experience, may apply as well.

If English is not your first language, you may need to undertake an approved English language test. You can discuss the available options with your personal academic consultant.

Core module

Work-Based Learning

The module acknowledges that students studying at this level have effective reflective skills. This module enables the student to further develop reflection which is underpinned by critical thinking, reading and writing. The module promotes professional development in relation to the student’s own learning needs, personal, professional and/or academic interests. Content includes drawing up a Learning Agreement: – expectations; how to write learning outcomes at level 10; Different types of evidence may be used in the portfolio ie., exploration of the concept of reflection, use and appraisal of different reflective models; activities to facilitate a deeper understanding of the process of critical thinking and writing and its application to professional and practice development.

Learning Outcomes for module:

LO1: Develop and execute an Independent Learning Agreement commensurate with SCQF level 10.
LO2: Demonstrate critical thinking and reflection in relation to academic, intellectual, personal and professional needs
LO3: Construct a work based portfolio of evidence to meet the learning outcomes in a Learning Agreement.

Creativity, Innovation and Enterprise

This module explores definitions of creativity, innovation and enterprise. It allows you consideration of the range of tools and techniques used in organisations to encourage creativity. The module will also examine characteristics of the innovative organisation, and how to create an appropriate environment for creativity. Consideration is also given to the barriers to creativity and how to overcome them. Finally, the module explores the planning process of New Product / Service Development within enterprising

Learning Outcomes for module:

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Identify the role of creativity and innovation in enterprising organisations.

LO2: Comprehend the tools and techniques of creative and innovation management.

LO3: Examine the barriers to creativity and how successful organisations overcome these challenges.

LO4: Evaluate the process of planning from creativity to the implementation of innovation in enterprising organisations – in private, public and the voluntary sectors. 

Business Growth Issues

Emphasis will be on entrepreneurial leadership of small and growing businesses and the key issues facing them. The module workshops will include;• Growth models to understand the phases of growth and seek evidence in organisations• Identifying and reviewing examples of building growth businesses, and the role of the entrepreneur in the leadership of these businesses • The growth of businesses will be evaluated by utilising the strategic management tools including strategic analysis, strategic choices and strategic implementation options

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Evaluate entrepreneurial aspirations and reasons for growth.

LO2: Understand the importance of growth businesses in the economy.

LO3: Discuss and critique the characteristics of the growth stages of developing a business.

LO4: Analyse and review successful growth strategies of entrepreneurial businesses.

Business Processes

Internal analysis within the business: functions and value chain activities; capabilities, core competencies and the significance of cross functional processes.The organisational functions of operations, marketing, human resource management, and information management: within each area the essence of the functional activity, its strategic role and measures of effectiveness will be examined; at least one key cross functional process within each area will act as a ‘focal point? or ‘catalyst? e.g. operations and supply chain management.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to

LO1: Evaluate the role of an organisation’s internal capabilities and how these may be structured to attain competitive advantage and opportunities for collaboration.

LO2: Appraise the role and scope of specific business functions and their contribution to an organisation’s success delivery of customer value.

LO3: Analyse and evaluate the significance of key, cross functional processes essential to the delivery of customer value.
